Sunday, August 22 – The Government of Canada has announced that it will match dollar-for-dollar, every eligible donation made between August 2 and September 12, 2010 by individual Canadians to Canadian registered charities, including to CMAT- Canadian Medical Assistance Teams. The equivalent contribution will support continuing humanitarian assistance, early recovery, and reconstruction in Pakistan through projects undertaken by the many organizations and non-governmental organizations responding to the floods in Pakistan.
Heavy monsoon rains have caused the worst floods in living memory in Pakistan. More than 1,600 people are thought to have died, with some 12-14 million people badly affected and displaced.
The Swat Valley took the brunt of the monsoon floods initially but swollen rivers have now carried floodwaters to Punjab province. Millions of people have lost homes or livelihoods. Waters have washed away thousands of acres of crops, buildings, schools, bridges and railway tracks.
CMAT previously responded in Pakistan after the 2005 earthquake in Kashmir. The organization continues to have strong ties and partners in the region.
THE TIME TO ACT IS NOW – THIS IS A DISASTER OF UNIMAGINABLE PROPORTIONS.
As a result of CMAT’s lengthy response in Haiti after the earthquake in January of this year, we desperately need your generous financial support to facilitate our efforts in reaching survivors in Pakistan with urgently needed medical supplies, health care expertise and clean drinking water.
CMAT is planning a health and medical response to the flood-affected areas, and plans to imminently deploy mobile teams of volunteer primary health care providers, including physicians, nurses and paramedics, who will carry much needed medical supplies and water purification systems to affected communities. CMAT will provide necessary health care to thousands of families who have been displaced by the flood waters and are at high risk for illness and acquiring communicable diseases.
A call for CMAT health volunteers will be made in the very near future.
Charitable donations can be made directly on the CMAT website by clicking here.
Despite our efforts, the scale of the disaster is massive and more help will continue to be needed. Every dollar will help CMAT to provide health care to the people of Pakistan. Please be generous.
